    The straightforward answer: it depends on the rules of the specific interview. Some companies explicitly prohibit AI assistance during interviews. If a company tells you not to use external tools, using a copilot is a violation of their stated policy, full stop. Do not do it.

    For companies that have not stated a policy — which is still the majority in 2026 — the ethics are genuinely ambiguous. Consider the spectrum of tools candidates already use during interviews without controversy:

    • Written notes on a notepad (universally accepted)
    • A second monitor with documentation open (common, rarely questioned)

Until then, use your judgment, err on the side of integrity, and remember that any tool that gets you a job you cannot actually do is not doing you a favor.

    Privacy and Data Handling

    Before using any copilot tool, understand what happens to your data. Interview audio contains sensitive information — your voice, your career history, proprietary details about your current employer's systems, and the interviewer's questions (which may be under NDA).

    • Can you delete everything? You should be able to permanently delete all session data — transcripts, analytics, recordings — at any time.

Look for tools that use the latter approach — direct-to-provider audio processing with short-lived keys, so interview audio never passes through the tool company's servers.

    Week 1: Mock interviews without the copilot. Establish your baseline. How do you perform with no assistance? Record yourself, review the analytics (filler words, pacing, STAR compliance), and identify your specific weak spots. This baseline is essential because it tells you what you actually need the copilot for.

    Week 2: Mock interviews with the copilot active but ignored. Let the copilot run, but do not look at it. Focus entirely on the interviewer. After the session, review what the copilot suggested and compare it to what you said. Where did it surface points you missed? Where did it suggest things you had already covered? This tells you where the tool adds value for your specific skill profile.

    Week 3: Selective integration. Start glancing at the copilot's suggestions during sessions. Practice the rhythm: hear question, pause, glance, absorb one key point, look back at camera, speak. Run at least 3 sessions this week. Ask a friend to watch your video feed and tell you when your eye contact breaks noticeably.

    Week 4: Full simulation. Run 2 to 3 mock interviews that simulate real conditions as closely as possible. Use the same video call software, the same display arrangement, and the same copilot settings you will use in the real interview. Time yourself. Track how many copilot suggestions you use versus ignore. If you are still reading more than glancing by this point, spend another week on Week 3.

    This four-week ramp may seem excessive for a tool that is supposed to make interviews easier. It is not. The candidates who skip the practice phase and use a copilot cold in a real interview almost always perform worse than they would have without it.
